Sea Dragon Lodge & Villas on Kangaroo Island
Sea Dragon Lodge & Villas on Kangaroo Island.
Sea Dragon Lodge & Villas on Kangaroo Island is a multi-award winning 5-star luxury eco-friendly retreat with extraordinary ocean views that offers not only exquisite food and an abundance of wildlife on the estate but also its very own private beach just a stone’s throw away. If you are looking for the ultimate island escape and a truly authentic Kangaroo Island luxury experience in a fully-self contained lodge, then look no further. A visit here will undoubtedly leave you with memories that’ll last a lifetime.
Besides the significant comfort, luxury touch and relaxing atmosphere a stay at Sea Dragon gives you, it’s not everyday that you have the possibility to go on your very own self-guided wildlife safari adventure on a 250-acre seafront estate simply by just stepping outside your front door. With winding trails across sloping hills and lush vegetation, amazing ocean views and cliff tops this was one of our favorite things to do here and we have never experienced anything quite like it.
THE LODGE
With 190 square metres of living space and uninterrupted views over the ocean, The Lodge is Sea Dragon Lodge & Villas flagship in the deluxe range accommodation and one of the finest lodges we have ever stayed at when traveling the world. It can accommodate up to 8 guests and includes an expansive terrace, four bedrooms and a leather lounge with an open floor plan that connects to the kitchen as well as a separate timber dining setting. This is ideal for families or couples that travel together.

Even though we could easily have stayed longer since we had such a wonderful time – we were very happy with three nights in The Lodge. We simply loved the connection between The Lodge and the surrounding wildlife and nature. Just by walking of the terrace stairs heading downhill it felt like you were off on an adventure into the wild.

BEDROOM
The master bedroom includes a comfortable king-size bed with views overlooking the ocean and direct access to the terrace. It is not everyday that you can wake up to the morning sun and look out towards the sea and maybe in the blink of an eye register the kangaroo family making its way downhill. Truly spectacular.

While we of course didn’t use the other bedrooms in the lodge there were two twin bedrooms, each with two single beds – and another master bedroom with a king-size bed which also offers views over the ocean.

LOUNGE
The lounge is merged together with the kitchen and separate dining area through an open floor plan and opens up onto the expansive terrace on the outside. The huge windows facing the ocean let in a lot of bright light which bounces of the walls and exposed white rafters in the raked ceiling giving off that wow factor.

The cozy and stylish interior combines comfortable furnishings with light and bright colors and natural warmth of timber floors. This made the inside melt together with the outside in perfect harmony.

Let yourself unwind in the leather sofas after a day full of adventure with a glass of wine and perhaps a cheese platter, in front of the cozy gas log fireplace. But if you are in the mood for some entertainment there is of course always the flatscreen smart TV at your disposal.

KITCHEN
The bright white and spacious kitchen is stocked with essentials and features european appliances, stone bench tops, dishwasher as well as a full-size fridge and freezer. It’s connected with the lounge and dining area and faces the terrace. Right in the middle is the big kitchen island which is perfect when cooking food or why not when having breakfast.

TERRACE
When stepping out on the terrace you are greeted by a large front deck with outdoor furniture and breathtaking views over the ocean. The terrace spans the whole length of the lodge and gives you plenty of space for whatever your needs may be. It’s the ultimate setting for everything from breakfast, lunch and dinner to evening snack time, barbeque and perhaps a drink. It is also the perfect spot to enjoy either sunsets or sunrises, if you are not down at the Pink Bay of course.
The terrace offers breathtaking views over the ocean as well as peace and tranquility.
We loved the peace and tranquility on the terrace and tried as often as we could to let the ocean breeze and vistas, lively wildlife and surrounding colors grab our attention to the fullest whenever we spent time out there.
The Deluxe Spa Eco-Villa offers you amazing ocean views not only from the comfort of your own jacuzzi, but also from the lounge and bedroom.
Although The Lodge, where we stayed, do not offer jacuzzi on its expansive terrace there is always the possibility to book for example the Deluxe Spa Eco-Villa instead if this is one of the luxuries that you would like in your stay at Sea Dragon. There are two Deluxe Spa Eco-Villas, Osprey and Casuarina – and both of them offers equally breathtaking views both from the lounge, bedroom and jacuzzi out on the terrace.
There is no better way to enjoy a relaxing moment in your very own heated jacuzzi than with a glass of sparkling wine and your partner by your side.
It’s the perfect setting for any couple looking for a romantic time together. Imagine leaning backwards with a glass of bubbly in one hand and the palm of your loved one in the next as you look out across the estate and observe kangaroos jump past on the green grass heading towards the bushes.
FOOD AND WINE
Home-cooked food from farm-fresh local produce, delivered to your doorstep – now that’s the right way to go. We loved the food at Sea Dragon which featured meals such as lamb from local sheep farms and seafood from local fishermen and the only thing we had to do every day was to heat it up in the oven or microwave. Such exceptional hospitality is rare and valued greatly.

Slow Cooked Lamb Shank with mashed potatoes and Thai Red Chicken Curry were on todays menu.

What better way to enjoy the magical sunset from the terrace than with antipasti and sparkling wine.
The local Kangaroo Island produce was delicious and to top it off we savoured delicate Kangaroo Island wine. Undoubtedly this is the best way to experience the flavours of a new place where you have never been before.
PINK BAY BEACH
A stay at Sea Dragon Lodge & Villas gives you access to your very own private beach just a few minutes walk downhill from your lodge. Pink Bay Beach offers pristine sand and beautiful turquoise waters where you can occasionally spot dolphines which we did one of the days. Just when you think it doesn’t get much better than the close encounters with kangaroos.

The narrow V-shaped Pink Bay and the nearby rocks is not only a place to come for your sunbathing and swimming desires but also the perfect picnic spot to enjoy a glass of wine and some snacks. If you are lucky and sit quietly enough, you will most certainly in due time both see and feel the wildlife around you.
ACTIVITIES
Kangaroo Island is the third largest island in Australia and you’ll find that there is plenty of activities and attractions to choose from. Besides Pink Bay Beach and Cape Willoughby lighthouse there is also the beautiful Antechamber beach as well as Dudley Wines and False Cape Wines close-by.
If you feel a bit more adventurous and wish to do something unique the Secret Seals Tour, which is Sea Dragon Lodge & Villas own tour, offers you exclusive access to a seal colony on the south coast that only guests staying a Sea Dragon have access to. This means you won’t encounter any other tourists and you get to enjoy refreshments served on a cliff with stunning ocean views in total peace.
On the self-guided Kangaroo Safari. Oh, yes we saw plenty of Kangaroos.
If you dont see them in the open you will most certainly find them among the trees and bushes.
For activities in the area around the lodge itself we cannot recommend it highly enough to do a walk during either sunrise or sunset, because you will see so much wildlife and in particular kangaroos. It is a special feeling to walk past a bush and then suddenly stand face to face with a kangaroo. Other wildlife includes wallabies, echidnas, goannas and eagles as well as dolphins that regularly visit the Pink Bay.
LOCATION
Sea Dragon Lodge and Villas is located on 2575 Willoughby Road in Penneshaw about 16 km from the mainland on the East side of the world-renowned Kangaroo Island. Once you have taken the ferry from the mainland over to the island it’s a short drive on unsealed government roads to reach the lodge. We traveled there in our 2WD and it wasn’t a problem at all, as long as you take it slow – something you should do anyways considering the wildlife in the area.

Extraordinary views over Pink Bay.

In a way the lodge lies isolated, close to the ocean, on a part of the island where you don’t meet that much people, but from the lodge you can easily explore the other more exploited parts of the island should you feel the urge to do so. The location of the lodge is something that we really appreciated since it gave us the sense of being off-grid and closer connected to nature and its wildlife. You could easily spend a couple of days here without longing for other activities, since you already have enough to keep you occupied.
Lush vegetation and sloping hills dominates the seafront estate.
For further instructions on how to get to the island, how to get around while you are on the island and how you get to Sea Dragon Lodge and Villas you will find a detailed overview on their website right here.
HOW TO BOOK
One of the things we really loved about Sea Dragon was their focus on local produce as well as their aim towards minimalising the environmental footprint. They are fully-self contained and eco-friendly and operate on solar power, rainwater and natural gas – which has now become more important than ever.
A stay at Sea Dragon Lodge & Villas is the perfect island getaway that will leave you with lasting memories and undoubtedly an urge to return wanting more.
